Why Gaming PCs Need Specialized Repair

Gaming computers are not like everyday office machines. They run high-end graphics cards under sustained load, push CPUs to their thermal limits, and depend on power supplies that deliver hundreds of watts cleanly. When something goes wrong with a gaming PC, the symptoms can be subtle — random frame drops, occasional blue screens during specific titles, or fans that suddenly sound like a jet engine.

A lot of general repair shops treat gaming PCs like any other desktop. They run a quick scan, reinstall Windows, and send you home. That's a waste of your time and money if the real problem is a GPU that throttles under load, a PSU that can't sustain its rated wattage, or a CPU cooler that's lost contact with the die.

At PC Genie, we understand gaming hardware. We've worked on rigs built around everything from budget GTX cards to high-end RTX 4090 setups, AMD Ryzen and Intel Core systems, AIOs and custom loops. We diagnose with the right tools — GPU stress tests, thermal imaging, PSU load testers, and memory diagnostics — not just a surface-level scan.

Common Gaming PC Issues We Fix

Most gaming PC repairs fall into a handful of categories. Here's what we see in our Austin shop every week and how we approach each one.

Overheating and Thermal Throttling

Overheating is the single most common gaming PC issue we see. Dried-out thermal paste, dust-packed heatsinks, dead case fans, and poor airflow all cause your CPU or GPU to throttle performance to protect itself. You'll notice FPS drops during long sessions, higher-than-normal fan noise, or sudden shutdowns mid-game.

We open the case, clean every heatsink and fan, reapply quality thermal paste (we use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or equivalent), check that all fans are spinning at the correct speeds, and evaluate your overall airflow. If your case layout is choking airflow, we'll tell you and suggest practical improvements.

GPU Failures and Artifacts

Graphics card problems show up as visual artifacts (colored dots, lines, or blocks on screen), driver crashes, black screens, or the GPU not being detected at all. Sometimes the card itself has failed. Other times it's a driver conflict, a power delivery issue, or the card has simply come loose from the PCIe slot.

We test the GPU under load with benchmarking tools, check temperatures and clock speeds, swap into a known-good test system if needed, and give you an honest assessment. If the card is dead, we'll tell you — and we won't try to sell you one at a markup. We'll help you choose a replacement that fits your budget and performance needs.

FPS Drops and Stuttering

Not every performance problem is hardware. Background processes, bloated startup programs, outdated drivers, Windows power settings, and even a nearly full SSD can tank your frame rates. We check the software side thoroughly before blaming hardware — because the fix might be free.

If the problem is hardware, we'll identify the bottleneck. Maybe your RAM is running at JEDEC speeds instead of XMP, your SSD is thermal throttling, or your CPU is inadequate for the GPU you're running. We explain the issue in plain terms and give you options.

Blue Screens and Crashes

Blue screens during gaming are often different from blue screens on a regular PC. Gaming puts extreme stress on the GPU, RAM, and PSU simultaneously. A marginally unstable overclock, a stick of RAM with intermittent errors, or a PSU that sags under peak load can all cause crashes that only appear during games.

We run extended memory tests (MemTest86), stress-test the CPU and GPU independently, monitor voltages under load, and check crash dump logs to pinpoint the failing component.

PSU Issues

Power supply problems are sneaky. A failing PSU might cause random reboots, failure to POST, coil whine, or instability that only shows up under heavy load. If you've recently upgraded your GPU and started seeing issues, your PSU might not have enough wattage or its 12V rail might be sagging.

We test PSUs with a dedicated load tester and multimeter, not just a paperclip test. If your PSU needs replacing, we'll recommend one that matches your system's actual power requirements with appropriate headroom.

Custom Build Diagnostics

Built your own PC and it won't POST? Upgraded a component and now things are unstable? We see this regularly. Common culprits include incompatible RAM, incorrectly seated CPU coolers, missing motherboard standoffs, BIOS settings that need updating for new hardware, and cables plugged into the wrong headers.

We'll go through your build methodically, test each component, and get your system running. No judgment — everyone starts somewhere, and even experienced builders hit snags.
