What to look for

What makes a good computer repair shop?

Not every computer repair shop operates the same way. Some diagnose before quoting; others start working and surprise you with the bill. Here are the qualities that separate a trustworthy shop from one that wastes your time.

Clear diagnostics before any work

A good shop runs a proper diagnostic and tells you what's actually wrong before they start billing labor. If a shop won't explain the problem in plain English, that's a red flag.

Transparent pricing with no hidden fees

You should know what you're paying before the work begins. Look for shops that provide written estimates and don't tack on surprise charges after the fact.

Repair approval before work begins

The best shops won't touch your machine without your go-ahead. They diagnose, present the options, and let you decide whether the repair makes sense for your situation.

Good communication throughout

You shouldn't have to call three times to find out if your computer is ready. A reliable shop keeps you updated at each stage: diagnosis, approval, repair, and pickup.

Data privacy and careful handling

Your computer holds personal files, passwords, and photos. A professional shop treats your data with respect, never browsing personal files and discussing any data risks before starting work.

Real local reviews from Austin customers

Check Google reviews, Yelp, and Nextdoor for recent feedback from people in Austin. Look for specific details in reviews, not just star ratings. Patterns in reviews tell you more than any single five-star comment.

Practical repair-vs-replace advice

Sometimes a repair doesn't make financial sense. A trustworthy technician will tell you honestly when you're better off putting the repair cost toward a new machine instead of pushing you toward an expensive fix.

Experience with PCs, Macs, laptops, and gaming computers

Austin is a diverse tech market. The best shops handle Windows desktops, MacBooks, business laptops, and custom gaming rigs without sending you somewhere else for half the job.

Before you choose

Questions to ask before choosing a repair shop

Before you hand over your computer, ask these questions. The answers will tell you a lot about how the shop operates and whether they're going to treat you fairly.

  1. 1
    Do they diagnose before quoting?

A shop that quotes a price before looking at your machine is guessing. Diagnostics should come first so the quote reflects the actual problem, not a ballpark.

  2. 2
Do they explain whether the repair is worth it?

If a motherboard repair on a six-year-old laptop costs more than a refurbished replacement, a good shop will tell you that up front. Watch out for shops that push repairs on machines that should be retired.

  3. 3
Do they work on your specific device type?

Some shops only do Windows PCs. Others specialize in Macs. If you have a gaming desktop, a MacBook, or a business laptop, confirm the shop has experience with your specific hardware.

  4. 4
Do they protect your data during repair?

Ask about their policy on data handling. Will they back up your drive before replacing it? Will they alert you if a repair might result in data loss?

  5. 5
Do they have local Austin reviews?

Reviews from actual Austin customers carry more weight than testimonials on a shop's own website. Google and Yelp reviews are a good starting point.

  6. 6
Do they provide a written estimate?

Verbal quotes are easy to revise. A written estimate protects both you and the shop, and it sets clear expectations about cost before any work begins.

  7. 7
    What's their turnaround time?

Some repairs are same-day. Others require ordering parts. A transparent shop will give you a realistic timeline during the diagnostic rather than promising everything is a quick fix.

Why PC Genie

Why Austin customers choose PC Genie

We built this guide because we believe informed customers make the best decisions. Here's how PC Genie measures up against the criteria above.

Honest repair-or-replace guidance

We'll tell you if a repair doesn't make financial sense. We'd rather earn your trust on a $50 standard diagnostic (or $99 gaming PC diagnostic) than push a $400 repair on a machine that's not worth it.

Fast diagnostics

Same-day diagnostics when possible. We identify the issue, explain it clearly, and give you a written estimate before any repair work begins.

PCs, Macs, laptops, and gaming PCs

One shop for everything. Windows desktops, MacBooks, business laptops, gaming rigs, and custom builds. No need to drive across town to a specialist.

Data recovery options

We offer in-shop logical data recovery for failed drives, accidental deletions, and corrupt partitions. For severe physical failures, we'll advise you honestly on next steps.

Two convenient Austin locations

We keep you updated at every stage. Drop-off, diagnosis, estimate, approval, repair, and pickup. No guessing, no chasing us for updates.

How it works

Our repair process

Every repair at PC Genie follows the same five steps. No surprises, no unauthorized work, and no charges you didn't agree to.

  1. Drop-off

Bring your computer to either Austin location during business hours. Walk-ins are welcome, or call ahead if you'd like us to be ready for a specific issue.

  2. Diagnostic

We run a thorough diagnostic to identify the root cause. Standard PC/laptop diagnostics are $50 (gaming PCs $99). We explain what we find in plain English, not technician jargon.

  3. Estimate and approval

You receive a written estimate with the repair cost and timeline. We only proceed after you approve the work. If the repair doesn't make sense, we'll tell you.

  4. Repair

Parts are ordered if needed, the fix is performed, and the machine is tested before we call you. Many repairs are completed same-day or next-day.

  5. Pickup

We contact you when the repair is complete. You pay only for the work you approved. We walk you through what was done and any follow-up recommendations.

FAQ

Common questions about choosing a repair shop

Look for a shop that diagnoses before quoting, provides transparent pricing with no hidden fees, has strong local reviews from Austin customers, and gives you honest repair-vs-replace advice. A good shop will also communicate clearly throughout the process and handle your data with care.

Costs vary by the issue. Diagnostics typically start around $50 standard ($99 for gaming PCs), with repair labor from $99/hr. Simple fixes like virus removal or RAM upgrades cost less than complex repairs like liquid damage or motherboard work. A good shop will always give you a clear estimate before starting work.

It depends on the age of the machine, the cost of the repair relative to replacement, and whether the computer still meets your needs. A trustworthy repair shop will give you an honest assessment. As a general rule, if the repair costs more than 50% of what a suitable replacement would cost, replacement is usually the better value.

Some do, but not all. Many shops specialize in either Windows PCs or Macs. If you need work on both platforms, or if you have a gaming PC, look for a shop that explicitly lists all device types they service. PC Genie works on PCs, Macs, laptops, and gaming computers under one roof.

Back up important files before any repair if possible. If your computer won't turn on and you can't back up, ask the shop about their data protection policy. A good repair shop will never access your personal files unnecessarily and will discuss data risks with you before performing any work that could affect your storage.
